About the Event

This is the perfect opportunity for you to get out on the water!  Students in this class will learn water safety, sailing terminology, names and functions of boat parts, points of sail, steering, boat handling skills, sail trim, tacking, jibing, reaching, and both upwind and downwind sailing.  Students may sail alone, in pairs, or with an instructor on Butterfly, Laser or JY15 sailboats.  Instruction is tailored to each student’s skill level or knowledge.

First-time sailors are required to complete two-sessions of Learning & Orientation. Upon completion of the Orientation, repeat and returning sailors may purchase as many additional sessions as they wish on a per-evening basis. Instruction is continually adjusted as sailors become more experienced.

Sailors should meet in the MYC Sailing School classroom.  The MYC Sailing School is located in the building to the north of the Muskegon Yacht Club.  Parents will need to sign a Liability Waiver and Emergency Treatment Authorization form as well as a Concussion Awareness form prior to the student starting camp.  These documents will be emailed to you 3 to 5 days prior to the start date of camp to print from home or we will have forms available to fill out in person just prior to the start of camp.

Please review our Covid Safe Sail protocol.  Masks or bluffs will be required when students are indoors or during times when 6 foot of distance between students is not possible.

Students should dress comfortably with a bathing suit under their clothing and a life vest.  Students should bring their own water bottle and sunscreen. Sharing will not be permitted due to Covid safety protocols.  Other helpful items are a hat and sunglasses with a strap.

All students will be swim tested for safety on the first day of class, prior to any time on the water.
